Crappie Spawn Map
Where To Find 'Em Shallow And When
POSTED BY: Dr. Hal Schramm
March 02, 2011
Each zone on the map represents the approximate date (to the nearest week) when crappies, both black and white, begin spawning. Actual dates in your immediate area may vary due to local water temperatures and weather conditions. Note that the dates shown apply to large, public waters; crappies will spawn earlier in smaller or shallower water bodies. Spawning activity in rivers is highly dependent on the weather upstream, and the spawn may occur earlier or later than in nearby lakes.
How long the spawn lasts also depends on the size and form of the lake. Spawning may occur in shallow, dark-bottom bays two to three weeks earlier than in the main lake. Similarly, in rivers crappie may spawn in shallow backwaters as much as a month earlier than in large river lakes. Exactly where crappie spawn varies among lakes and reservoirs, but spawning areas are out of any flow and usually in areas of vegetation or brush near shore.

Not sure how many people know this, but stickle back minnows, often thrown away when found in a batch of purchased minnows, are deadly on Crappies. I have never caught any other species of fish on them, but crappies will clobber them, even if they are hanging dead on the hook. I don't know why, but I know it's true.

yes stickle backs are deadly on crappies.i save the ones from my minnow bucket and stock pile them in a 55gal tank. recently in the duluth aquarium i learned that stickle backs are fish .there are 2species ,they grow to 2inches weight 1oz.i was very amazed to learn this .i always thought they kinda look like small walleye

Weird thing happened in local pond last year! They were close to shore all fishing season until it got colder in the fall. I'm wondering if it's overly crowded.

Lake Hartwell crappies were hit with a cold spell in the beginning of the spawn, and it seems to have them spawning in deep water. Some of my fish come from the banks, but for the most part they are holding onto hardwoods around 15 foot deep still full of eggs. Eggs are getting loose and turning orange in color.

Water temp. was up enough but only found a few in shallow water.maybe I can get them to go again when its not so windy, before Easter we don't have kids, we ARE kids at heart not by age.

Haven't got a chance to go, but there's a small lake near my home that is always good for crappie this time of year. The article on crappies spawning was informative. We had early warm weather and then it dropped off cool again. This coming week it's supposed to stay around 80's during the day. Can't wait to try out my new Crappie 1000 pole I picked up at the flea market. Telescopic 16 feet with a line holder. Perfect for bank fishing next to the bridge. Let you guys knwo how I do here in South Carolina.

Crappie have barely started hitting here in Idaho, as we have had a long, cold, wet spring. Seems to have the fish confused on what they're supposed to be doing! Hopefully the weather will warm up later in June and we can get to fishin' proper-like!
